Statement on Verdict in the Trial of Players Involved in the World Junior Hockey Sexual Assault Case

July 25, 2025 (Toronto, ON) – Canadian Women & Sport acknowledges yesterday’s verdict in the trial of players involved in the world junior hockey sexual assault case, with deep recognition of the profound impact this case has had.
Now is the time to reflect on one of the essential lessons underscored by this case: the continued, urgent need to foster cultures in sport that uphold the inherent dignity, safety, and worth of every individual.
While progress has been made, patriarchy and misogyny continue to shape the experiences of women and girls — in sport and across society. Harm is not only found in the most extreme and visible cases, but also in everyday practices, structures, and interactions.
This is a renewed call to action for sport organizations, coaches, administrators, board members, and all those in positions of influence. We must continue to pursue systemic change — by challenging unhealthy norms and behaviours, implementing meaningful safeguards, and embedding gender equity at every level.
When respect and equity are woven into sport, the impact reaches far beyond the game—shaping healthier, safer, and more inclusive communities everywhere.
