In 1981, Canadian Women & Sport was created to push for positive changes in Canada's sport system. The goal was clear: to see more girls and women involved in every part of sport—as athletes, coaches, officials, and leaders.
Our Story
For over 40 years, Canadian Women & Sport has been driving change to create a more inclusive and equitable sport system. What began as a push for fairness in funding and opportunity has grown into a national movement, empowering girls and women to lead, play, and thrive in sport at every level.
Our Beginning: A Movement for Change
Our Evolution: From CAAWS to Canadian Women & Sport
Originally known as the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS), the organization rebranded in 2020 to become Canadian Women & Sport. This new name reflects a renewed commitment to challenging the status quo and building better sport through gender equity.

Our Impact: Four Decades of Advocacy
For over 40 years, Canadian Women & Sport has been a leading voice for gender equity in Canadian sports. By partnering with sport organizations, governments, and leaders, the organization has worked to create a sport system where girls and women can thrive.
