Statement on the Future of Sport in Canada Commission

December 12, 2023 – Canadian Women & Sport fully supports the creation of the Future of Sport in Canada Commission and the government’s additional actions announced this week to address maltreatment in the sport system.

To the survivors whose stories, experiences and advocacy have contributed directly to this moment, thank you for your courage and conviction. We are proud to stand in solidarity with you in working for change.

At Canadian Women & Sport, we share Minister Qualtrough’s vision of a sport system that is safe, inclusive and welcoming. It is a vision that has driven our work for over 42 years.

We are encouraged by the Minister’s commitments to ground this work in human rights, focus on broad systems change, and ensure the values of accountability, transparency and integrity guide the way forward.

As the process unfolds, we will actively seek opportunities to bring a strong intersectional gender lens to this initiative, echoing the Minister’s call for the root causes of harmful behaviour – racism, misogyny, homophobia and transphobia, ableism and other systems of oppression – to be addressed.

A better, safer, more inclusive sport system is possible. This commission marks an important step forward in the journey to get there.
