May Newsletter – Charting a New Path: Latest Updates to Canadian Women & Sport

Spring is (finally) here! And with the new season, brings new opportunities for the future of the Canadian sport system. On April 19th, 2021, the Federal Budget was announced and included $80M dedicated to growing sport, physical activity and recreation in Canada, with attention to diversity and inclusion as integral components. The announcement also made history as The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, became the first woman to deliver a federal budget.

Speaking of exciting, 2021 marks the 40th anniversary of Canadian Women & Sport! From day one, we have been advocating for progressive change within Canada’s sport system. While these 40 years have flown by, there are lots of great memories that have happened along the way. Keep an eye out on our social feeds over the next few weeks for a celebration of our herstory!

We have some big goals for the future, and we are excited to share how we plan to achieve them. Find out how we are continuing our mission of creating an equitable and inclusive Canadian sport and physical activity system that empowers women and girls:

  • The 2021-2024 strategic plan has officially rolled out. The plan will focus on in-depth gender equity work with sport organizations at all levels of sport, transforming sport organizations with relationships as opposed to individual transactions and modernizing our current model.
  • The Alberta Same Game Challenge is underway with ten (10) local sport organizations taking part in a project that will support sport and physical activity in women and girls by implementing the Same Game Online Toolkit. Participating organizations will receive coaching and mentorship assistance, professional development, financial support and knowledge and competency to better understand how to engage women and girls in sport.
